Palermo’s of 63rd Street was opened in 1961 by Antonino and Carmela (Tirrito) Caldarone and their children Benedetto (Ben), Giuseppe (Joe), Ignazio (Frank), and Maria (Lia) shortly after immigrating from Italy. The 63rd Street location began as a small, mainly take-out restaurant located at 63rd Street and Maplewood. The pizza and spaghetti sauces were and are a treasured recipe of the Tirrito family, which boasts among its ancestors an acclaimed 18th century painter-poet, Fr. Fedele Tirrito-Palermo. Palermo’s authentic Italian food and pizza, made with quality ingredients and unique sauces, soon attracted vast attention and praise for their sweet, distinctive qualities.
